Log Home Log Repair

Like any responsible homeowner, you love your home and you maintain it properly. Your lawn is always mowed, your fence is nicely painted, and your eavestrough is securely attached and functioning properly. So, when you find a series of cracks and areas of rot in the logs of your log home, you can’t help buy get a little frustrated. After all, you know nothing about log home log repair.

Before your frustration progresses from kindling to a full-blown blaze, try some of the following techniques:

* Rot can be handled. First, determine where the rot ends. Take something long and hard, such as a screwdriver or chisel, and poke lightly enough that you won’t leave marks but hard enough that you’ll be able to tell where it is rotten. Rotten wood will cave easily, splinter, and may even have a family of insects living inside for you to meet.

Grind off the areas that are rotten and then treat the wood. If you do not want to leave a big gaping hole, purchase some wood filler that matches the color and texture of the wood and apply liberally. If the hole is a big one, you may want to consider performing a sectional repair, where you cut out the rotten section and replace it with a section of good wood.

* No stain, no gain. If the color is starting to fade it may be time to break out the stain. This can be fun, as you’ll get to choose the colors that you want to stain. Want to go a darker color? Break out the dark-wood stain and begin lathering on at will*.

*note: apply as directed, as lathering on at will may cause serious consequences, such as bubbling or catastrophic explosions. Always observe caution. This website is not responsible for anything, ever.
