Log Home Additions: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

Let’s get real for a second: you aren’t seriously considering adding a gunmetal accented hot tub to the side of your log home, right? Any log home additions that you make are going to need to meet the minimum criteria for eligibility: they match the home, they don’t deter from the home’s look and feel, and they don’t require extensive modifications to the log home.

The Good:

* Wooden-framed hot tubs, steam rooms, and pools. An excellent way to add elegance to your home, as well as providing an area of relaxation and tranquility. Who wouldn’t want to splash around in a nice pool after a hard days work?

* A sun room. Sun rooms greatly increase the appeal of a certain area of the house, and they look great. Color matched to the exterior of the home, a sun room will blend in seamlessly while adding so much to the home, both as value and as functionality.

The Bad:

* Half-finished work shops. Come on, you could at least take the time to finish the exterior walls so that they matched the rest of your home. It may only be used for work, but that doesn’t mean it needs to be an eyesore.

* Any log home additions which require anything to do with spandex. It wasn’t cool in the 80’s, and it definitely isn’t cool now. Regardless of what anyone tells you, Spandex is not making a spectacular comeback as a material for the home. Keep it out of the curtains.

The Ugly:

* Portable Bathrooms. Your home has many, there is no need to for a port-a-potti.

* Vinyl siding over the wood. No one knows why anyone would ever do this, but it has been done. Don’t do it, ever. Don’t even do it if someone pays you- it’s just not good karma.
